Climate
Temperatures vary according to region. The Caribbean has a warm and wet climate, while the Central and Mountainous regions have pleasant cooler temperatures, while the South is hot and dry. March and April are dry and dusty in the mountains, and the rainy season on the Coast (Tela and La Ceiba) is from October through January. However, it is common to have rain any time of year in the North Coast, the islands and the Moskitia.
Packing
Light and casual clothing is probably the best choice. A raincoat is also recommended in case of any unpredictable rain, as well as sandals and bathing suit for the beaches, and very comfortable shoes for walks and hikes. Don’t forget sunblock, sunglasses and a hat, to avoid strong UVA rays. Insect repellent is also advised, especially at night and in certain beaches.
Money
Although American dollars are widely accepted throughout the country, you can also use credit cards. ATM’s are available for cash withdrawals as well. For your own safety, use the ATM’s during the day, and in a secure area, busy with people. Travellers checks can be cashed in some banks, money exchanges and even hotels. It is not advised to travel with currency other than American dollars.
Unique celebrations
Upon arriving in Honduras, you might want to ask about any local festivals and fairs, which often honor a village’s patron saint. Even though many aren’t publicized, they are a great way to get to know real Honduran life.
Safety
While traveling to and from Honduras, never loose sight of your luggage and don’t leave it in the care of strangers. Keep all your documents safe and always carry a photocopy of your passport with the date of your arrival. If driving, obey speed limits, use safety belts, stop if a uniformed and identified officer asks you to, and never stop if unknown people at the side of the road signal you to do so. Only carry with you the amount of money you may need for the day.
